Top 150 guard Ty-Laur Johnson is making waves this spring

After a great junior season at Newark (NJ) St. Benedict’s and a terrific start to the season with the New York Rens, Ty Laur Johnson has things rolling.

The six-foot point guard has incredible speed and racked up big scores in Nike’s EYBL while also earning a spot on the 247Sports leaderboard. He’s at No. 136 overall now, but could progress more from the way he’s been playing lately.

“I feel like things are going well right now,” Johnson told 247Sports. “But I also feel like I could pick up my game a bit more. I can reduce turnovers and be a better playmaker. I like to make decisions and I work to see what happens and take it .”

Speed is the name of the game for Johnson. He’s blurry in the open field, difficult for defenders to stay up front in one-on-one situations and he’s a very smart scorer around the edge. The jump shot isn’t quite where he wants it to be just yet, but he’s getting there.

“I can get in the lane,” Johnson said. “I can score, I can kick shooters and I feel better with my jump shot. I’m just working to make it more consistent.”

Johnson currently holds offers from Creighton, Pittsburgh, Seton Hall, St. John’s and VCU. He hopes to stop at local programs in the near future.

Seton Hall: “The first day Shaheen Holloway When I got there, he called me and told me that whatever I’m about to go through, he’s been through it before and he feels he can help me.”

St. John’s: “A guy I know from Brooklyn went there, Shamorie Ponds and I’m cool with him and want to know more about them through his presence.”

Admittedly, Johnson has yet to deepen his recruitment. He’s just starting to feel things, but says he’s about to get a lot more serious about his college options.

“I’m going to delve into it more very soon. I think I’d like to play for a top-down team and I’m going to be a relationship guy.”
