Spring football is coming to an end for Tyler Legacy | Sports

Tyler Legacy officially concluded its spring football season with its red-white game Thursday at Red Raider Field on the campus of Tyler Legacy High School.

The red team (defense) won a 23-22 victory against the white team (attack).

“It was a competitive game,” Tyler Legacy head coach Joe Willis said. “Going to the spring game, everyone is excited except the head coach. The main goal is to come out of there healthy and have everyone available for summer training. I would be well with a tie each time during the spring game.

Willis said he saw a lot of positives in the spring game.

“The defense got a few saves and did a good job, especially early on, getting a couple of three outs,” Willis said. “Offensively, we had some good drives. Luke Wolf stood out, especially with his movement in the pocket, and he threw good balls. The defensive line as a unit was really good and the linebackers did a good job as well.

Willis said developing the passing game is a major focus for the Red Raiders entering the 2022 season.

“It’s something we prioritize,” Willis said. “We had good catches by our young receivers on Thursday, which is what we wanted to see. We feel really good about coming into the 7v7 season. We had 36 pass attempts in the short spring game. We want to return to a world where tempo, fast throws and downfield shots are part of the equation.

Now the Red Raiders are heading into the summer.

“I just want to see consistency,” Willis said. “As players, they have to make sure they are there for training. I want them to understand that there will be continuous competition throughout the summer. It’s a chance to work towards getting higher on the depth chart and have the opportunity to be competitive next season.

The Red Raiders are set to open their season on August 26, welcoming Lufkin. They then have back-to-back home games with Tyler (September 2) and Longview (September 9).

For the final out-of-district game, Legacy travels to Texarkana to meet Texas High on September 16.

The Red Raiders will be in District 10-6A along with Mesquite, Mesquite Horn, North Forney, Rockwall, Rockwall-Heath and Royse City.

The league slate includes: at Mesquite (23 September), v Rockwall-Heath (6 October), at Mesquite Horn (14 October), v Royse City (21 October), at North Forney (28 October ) and against Rockwall (November 4).
