JHunderbird Artists visits downtown Carefree this spring for the 27th Annual Spring Carefree Fine Arts and Wine Festival. The event will feature artwork from some of the world’s top artists, live music from multiple musicians, food trucks and treats. The star artist of this festival is the sculptural jeweler Victor Yurivilca.
Born at 13,000 feet above sea level in an Andean village, Yurivilca soon left for the big city of Lima, Peru to be educated. But civil engineering was not as interesting as traveling the world, so he abandoned his curriculum in favor of nomadic pursuits across Europe and the Americas. After escaping the war and turmoil that plagued his once idyllic hometown, he found himself in the United States, where his true passion emerged: jewelry design. There he created his unique style, which combines centuries-old Peruvian techniques and treasured cultural elements with impressions gleaned abroad. He uses no molds, castings or clay silver, just solid silver and high quality semi-precious stones, not to mention lessons learned from around the world.
With the help of his wife Yaneth, Victor creates unique and individual masterpieces. Unlike other artists who work from detailed sketches, Victor waits until he’s “filled with energy and good humor” and “feels a great connection” to the work, then lets his instincts guide him. .
“When I start creating, I have no concrete idea of what it will look like, only a general idea,” he says. “I like the idea that I’m creating something out of nothing.”
The festival also welcomes 160 other world-class artists presenting pieces in a variety of avenues and subjects, from paintings in all mediums to blown glass; hand-thrown pottery; articles of wood; calabash carvings; metallurgy; small, medium and life-size sculptures in metal, stone, bronze and mixed media; to photography; unique jewelry and more.
Entertainment includes contemporary jazz/funk band AfterGlow, which is guaranteed to get you moving and dancing.
Mobile food vendors include famous local confectionery Carolina Chocolates, authentic Chicago hot dogs offered by Mike’s Chicago Dogs, and more. Don’t forget to dine at Carefree restaurants, some of which offer tasty food tastings, including Black Mountain Café, English Tea Room, Giordano’s, Trattoria Romana Restaurant, Pizzicata and Venues Café.
A wine party wouldn’t be complete without wine, of course! Combining world-class artwork with an extensive selection of domestic and imported wines has long been Thunderbird Artists’ winning formula. Participating wineries this year include Cellar 433, Schlossadler International, King Frosch, Wilson Creek, Del Rio Springs and Mediterranean Table, as well as Desert Diamond Distillery, Elysian Desert Distillery and Adventurous Stills for whiskey, vodka and rum. A selection of frozen microbreweries are also available on site for tasting.
For an additional fee, guests receive an engraved souvenir glass with tasting tickets.
Get ready to wander around at will, sipping wine and immersing yourself in phenomenal art.
