10 spring wardrobe must-haves, according to a fashion writer

I recently sold bags and bags and bags of old clothes that I fell in love with to consignment stores. Right after I got home from lugging the huge bags all over town, I walked through my room and breathed a deep sigh of relief. There was so much room, and so much less clutter. I could finally see my bedroom floor! I was finally able to open my closet door without seven bags seeming to fall from the sky! I could finally let my boyfriend bring in some of his clothes that he kept in our shoe closet down the hall! This is exactly why I now binge shop in the spring for replacements with the money I earned from everything I got rid of. Look, I deserve some sort of reward for (my version of) spring cleaning, don’t I?

But the best way to balance my love of clothes and my shopping addicted tendencies is to focus on investing in spring staples that I really love and will wear again and again. My ultimate goal is to have a closet filled with less stuff and more high-quality pieces. So here are the 10 Nordstrom items I’ve found to be okay to take up space in my closet – from a Dua Lipa-approved, ‘It’ bag under the radar for a ribbed ocean blue shrug worthy of a ballet recital.

Luar Ana Mini Top Handle Bag in Smooth Leather

Luar Ana Mini Top Handle Bag in Smooth Leather

This Luar Ana mini bag is another “It” bag in the works, and the fact that it costs less than $250 seems like a typo. Raul Lopez, the New York-based brand’s designer and former co-founder of buzzy Hood by Air, has been one of the hardest people to talk to at the past two New York Fashion Weeks. To say his return to the schedule after a two-year hiatus was highly anticipated would be an understatement. Lopez’s smooth top-handle bag was worn by Dua Lipa last September and was even spotted at the Met Gala that month, as well as on Troye Sivan. It’s compact, attractive, affordable and, until recently, impossible to get your hands on. But now that it’s available from Nordstrom, I’m buying it immediately, and just know it’ll be a staple for years to come.

Marine Serre Logo Tank Top

My biggest fashion flaw is that I’m always on the lookout for trendy pieces and never think about stocking up on basics. So when it comes time to pair a Chopova Lowena skirt in multiple bouclé prints with a simple top, I find myself at a loss. I’ve decided that I’m too extra for a simple white Skims tank top (although it’s still fabulous), but I always find a way to justify this $150 catch from Marine Serre. She’s one of my favorite designers, so there’s that, and her iconic crescent logo looks like a secret handshake between fashion people. When you see one, you just know. I also love that this top is a basic with a little detail that makes it more unique and more me. And I’ve spoken to fashion editor friends who own one, and they all say the quality is second to none: it’s a tank top that will last.

Acne Studios Toj loose jeans

Acne Studios Toj loose jeans

I’ve recently fallen in love with a lot of my jeans, which is a shame considering they take up so much space in my already too small closet. But I fancied a pair that feels looser and gives me a bit more room to breathe. I basically want a pair like Katie Holmes’ that looks like the popular JNCO jeans from the 90s. And like anything acne does, these are perfect.

SafSafu Miss Limelight Single Drop Earring

Safsafu Miss Limelight Single Drop Earring

I own a SafSafu featured necklace from Farfetch, and I’ve had my eyes on these matching earrings for so long now. I love everything the brand does as it reminds me of my favorite Polly Pockets and I can attest that the colors are just as vibrant, if not more so, in person. The blue version of this earring also gives Rose’s necklace a lot in the Titian, which makes me even more obsessed with it.

Shoulder shrug in organic cotton ribbed Normandy in Paloma wool

Shoulder shrug in organic cotton ribbed Normandy in Paloma wool

I have never felt more relieved than when I graduated from high school and never had to take a ballet class again. Although I love barre classes, being a ballerina was never for me. Ironically, however, I have been completely mesmerized by the balletcore trend and find myself wanting to dress more and more like a ballerina every day. I blame my Miu Miu ballet flats. But if I’m going all out, I might as well get this Paloma wool shrug, which looks so much better than any of my old ballet costumes anyway.

YanYan Honey Sheer Pointelle Organic Cotton Blend Cropped Trousers

YanYan Honey Sheer Pointelle Organic Cotton Blend Cropped Trousers

The love I have for YanYan knows no bounds. I own so many pieces from the brand and I swear they make the most beautiful designer knitwear on the planet that is unlike anything else. But of course, knitwear is super seasonal in that once it gets too hot, I just can’t justify sweating it. That’s exactly why those short pants by YanYan are a must. I think they would make the perfect beach cover-up, and the contrasting blue ribbon reminds me of this Dua Lipa outfit. A win-win overall.

Balenciaga Le Cagole Small Shoulder Bag In Metallic Croc Embossed Leather

Balenciage Extra Small Le Cagole Lambskin Shoulder Bag

When I absolutely can’t afford a Balenciaga Le Cagole bag right now, I’m going to manifest one in my life if it’s the last thing I do. I can’t stop thinking about it, and I’m pretty sure there hasn’t been a day in the past three months that I haven’t dreamed to bed (I normally shop in line right before I go to bed, and no I don’t recommend doing that). Le Cagole bag is a modern take on Olsen’s iconic twin city bag and deservedly has become the biggest “It” bag of the past two years. I aspire to own as many as Alexa Demie one day, so please send me all the good vibes, or at the very least text my boyfriend and let him know I deserve some a.

Marc Jacobs Traveler canvas tote bag

Marc Jacobs Traveler canvas tote bag

At the other end of the bag spectrum is this hassle-free Marc Jacobs traveler canvas tote. Whenever the weather is nice, I find myself having to do everything outside, but I have very few bags I can trust to carry an entire picnic. This Marc Jacobs tote is a classic, and for good reason. I just know it will be the perfect bag for a summer Friday at the beach and the perfect picnic bag for a midday stroll in the park. And it’s probably one of the classiest canvas bags on the market.

Puppets and Puppets Cookie Leather Handle Bag

Puppets and Puppets Cookie Leather Handle Bag

Puppets and Puppets is the kind of name you probably wouldn’t know if you weren’t really into fashion, which is exactly why you should pay close attention to it. It’s absolutely a brand to know and it was one of the only fashion week shows last season that every fashion editor was excited to attend. The brand recently launched at Nordstrom, and a quick look at its offerings will tell you everything you need to know. There are a mini tote it looks like it is made of garlands, a pair of Mary Janes with a piece of cheese as a heel, and a black and white 3D cookie on a bag which I need in my life more than anything.

Louisa Ballou Heatwave Ruched Tulle Cover-Up Dress

Louisa Ballou Heatwave Ruched Tulle Cover-Up Dress

Thanks to the renewed interest in all things John Galliano, fashion girls have made mesh tops and dresses cool again, although honestly, I never stopped loving them. Louisa Ballou makes some of the best new takes available, with patterns so vivid they feel like a vacation in themselves. I especially love this knit dress because I think it will be great to layer it over pieces for spring, and I can easily turn it into a beach cover-up next summer.
